Kodak moment: Yawning at the Principal's Speech

Three Generations of Wicked Bad-Assed Humor in the Mah/Chan Dynasty

- where you actually see all of these fishies crammed to one side of the tank squeezing their bodies beneath this monstrous filter.

On the right hand corner, Dailo (aka - "Big Fat Meanie" dubbed by Miki) has dominated the gallon tank and forced every occupant to remain in a single place where he can keep his eye on them. Not only is he the biggest schleppin' fish, he's constantly rubbing up against Lo Nay (No. 2) 'cuz it's THAT time of the month again. Aiyah.

Eggs everywhere, but no fry yet and they mate like crazy. Even after killing 4 other fishes, I must be doing something right 'cuz fishies like to do the dirty deed on very specific conditions.

The pic is a few weeks old. My catfish has long gone and his poor body was reduced to a ghostly exoskeleton. Unfortunately, he only survived about a month before his eyeballs were cleanly plucked out, jagged fins chomped to nil and flopping on his side. I'm not sure if Lo Nay picked the crap outta him or the poor thing was diseased. He hardly ate because he couldn't see where the food was nor the direction he was swimming.

I'm done with fishes. Let's see how long these current suckers will last in this household. It's been 4 months and 3 weeks since I've gotten them...

I've been preoccupied and can't blog. Whenever I do have the time, my eyes are steadfastedly cemented to the telly thereby ruining the cost of thousands from lasik surgery. It's almost as though I've been reeled back into the days when I was a wee and poor college student who was unwilling to study or complete my papers - when there was ample time available.

So..hopefully I'll get back on track this week and get my ass in gear. I have much to post and blog, I just can't help but to watch TV instead.

Was watching the National Spelling Bee Contest on Thursday night and was truly amazed by these awesome kids. Every single one of them deserve high honors for being able to participate...dammit, it's a great achievement in his/her life.

Was a spelling bee school champ when I was 11. 'Cuz I wasn't exactly the brainiac in school, like Ching, I never, ever thought I could actually win this tournament. I didn't really study, I just reviewed the words over and tried to pronounce them. That was it.

Part of the reason why I won was because I didn't spell words that would trip up your ass (like stationery vs. stationary). When it was down to the final two, Freddy Lee (SMART kid) and I were excruciatingly trying to spell phosphorus. Between the two of us, we were exercising every permutation available in our grade minds to spell this phreaking word. Fifteen minutes later, the teachers agreed to skip it and go on to the next word - galoshes. Freddy and I were caught off guard and I watched him scratch his head in confusion. When he misspelled the word, a loud "DING" went off in my head. I realized that I had seen the word two weeks ago and had mentally pronounced it incorrectly.

So I won. Had no idea what the word meant.

Unfortunately, I failed miserably at the city finals partially because I was hard of hearing [thanks to mom - for not cleaning out my ears], but in all honesty, I didn't study. Totally forgot to bring the book home during the winter vacation so the loss was expected.

However, I'm still a decent speller. Thanks to courses in Linguistics, spelling makes even more sense than it did before. Today, people can't spell because of those wonderful spell check features in emails and MS Office programs. Yeesh, I still remember the days when I used manual typewriters, along with lots of correction fluid, to do my papers in college. Word processing programs had just started to make its appearances (WordPerfect 5.0 & Microsoft Works) in computers and heck, it didn't do a whole lot. Kids today are spoon-fed.
