Rant: Attack of the Wackos

I should've saw it coming.

After losing touch with Warren for about 4 years, I bumped into him on Catherine Street on a brisk May night. I hadn't seen him in the flesh since Billy's wedding, about 7-8 years ago. I didn't even recognize him...he flagged me down and gave me a little smile. Gone was his infamous boyish demeanor, replaced with a worn, bogged-down-by- society look. It was poignant.

Warren was my buddy back in high school and we had a lot of fun together. Unfortunately, he refused to grow up and would continue to reminisce and live in the past. You'll always hear him talk about the good ol' days in high school, during the glory of the Volleyball championships and guzzling over the love of his life.

The thing is, all of this took place a decade and a half ago. Throughout his 20's, he'd ramble about high school. Now that's he's in his 30's, he's yukking over the days that took place in college. So he's progressed just a tad bit.

I guess because he refused to move on with time and life, he couldn't hold down a decent job, a mature relationship, or even set goals for the future. After 9/11, he's been unemployed and has been collecting state and city aid since. Yes, he's survivor of the heinous 9/11 attacks and escaped just in the nick of time...but how long can you parade the town about it?

So he rings me up so "we" can talk. Two minutes into the conversation, I cursed myself for not having call waiting. He went on like an Energizer bunny, about his ideas, faults, friends and whatever crap he could conjure at the moment. I walked over to my computer, turned on Yahoo! games, started playing Spellbound, and 'uh-huhed' him for over an hour.

He repeated the same thing the following week. And the week after that.

I had to tell him NOT to call after 11PM...us families go to bed early (yeah right!), plus, I have no interest in being his psychological dumping ground. His last drivel was based on the burning of 6 bridges, just to reclaim outstanding debts from his 'friends'. Oh, we're talking $20 here, another $120 over there, and so forth. In fact, one of his friends had to call the cops on him for 'disrupting the peace'. It was embarrassing. Does one stoop to this level when they reach welfare?

Around the same time, my girlfriend, Ellen, started buzzing me up once a month. Okay...I have no time for her either. I'm not being insensitive, but again, she's another wacko who goes on and on and on...and I've lost count as to what her problems are this time. Ellen was my ESL tutor and a brilliant academic scholar, whose genius mind is her greatest fooking downfall. She can speak 8-9 languages fluently, has a Bachelor's degree in Theater Arts, a Masters desgree in religious studies and was working on her doctorate in Rabbinical studies until she got punted. Her 1st attempt at the Masters degree had gotten her kicked out when she pointed out the inconsistences between the Old and New Testaments.

Her academic spiel is charming and extremely inspiring. But she doesn't spend much time talking about it - she constantly battles with the demons of her dysfunctional family, her disability status, unemployment, legal issues, bureaucracy, so-called medical malpractice, her terminal illness and now, her husband. The worst of all, she's repetitive - she'll tell me the same thing over, and like Warren's call, I can't get a word in. Uh-huh.

Because Ellen is a genius, she has no concept of practicality. Zero. Zip. Nada. When she was unemployed (many, many times), she'd move in with some jerk of a guy so she'd have a roof over her head. Instead of flipping burgers, or do what she does best, teach (commanding $15 or more an hour in 1990 wages) to pay her damn rent. Because she no longer had the patience for teaching or wanted to deal with the institution's bureaucratic red tape, she opted to move in with jerks. Any jerk.

How else would she have gotten married?

The thing is, everything in life revolves with some political bullshit. When she was paralegal, she elevated herself in the same level as an attorney, loudly claiming herself as an officer of the court. Yes, you work for the legal system, but let's face reality, shall we? You're not a lawyer, despite the many years of schooling, she would've been one 3 times over. She threatens lawsuits to every academic institution who didn't put a handicap sign on their bathroom doors or a ramp in the hallways. Interestingly enough, most people who are disabled abhor being labeled as such. Those who don't look the part, get extremely upset when people don't show any pity nor hold the door for them.

So now, she's bitching day and night about her husband. Whatever. The reason why I drew the line on Ellen was because of her abominably stupid confession last year. She rang me up outta the blue at 9AM and apologized profusedly for "believing that you were being overdramatic about the problems you had with your family and the events that followed after 9/11. I'm so, so, so sorry to even think you were exaggerating about how bad things were and blah, blah, blah..."

Let me put it this way - I was literally seeing red when I heard the stupid confession. Some things are better left unsaid.

Last but not least, there's psychomom Grace Sr., who recently has been replicating a number of my habits and my effects. It's freakish, and no, I am not being paranoid. She's been donning a messenger bag (like me), hanging out at the internet cafe (like me), trying to get her daughter to play and become Joyce's best friend (Kristy goes around saying that Joyce is HER best friend, whatever...), got highlights in her hair (like moi), and started eyeing my nice batch of Asian rubber stamps for her scrapbooking projects. Does this woman have any ounce of originality in her?

Lindi = Freak Magnet.

Recent Email To My Buddies -

I was on the phone with jolly ol' Ching and we was chatting up 'bout the past. Because she had to hop on a teleconference, I wrote her back the thoughts I didn't get convey -

In the ninth grade, Mrs. Chang, my idiotic English teacher, preferred the talents of a Jehovah witness over me.

Whatever. I didn’t care.

But I was irked by the fact she commented everything I wrote for my book report on Sybil. It was clear that the book was way outta my grade level, but I felt that I understood enough of the book to write a report. I mean after all, the poor girl had 17 personalities and was severely abused by a mom who was psychologically wacked out. I remember Mrs. Chang picking on me for stupid shit like, “What about the 17th personality? How come you didn’t go into detail about that?”

That got me pissed because the 17th personality was that of a young toddler/child. Sybil was rarely succumbed by her 17th personality but was noted and identified by her psychotherapist during their hypnosis sessions. The first 5 personalities took over her life, not the baby! I didn’t even go into details regarding personalities #8-16, let alone #17!!! Or was it 12 personalities? Whatever, it was over 20 years ago.

Grrr…and she furthered her stupid comments about how it was possible for one identity to overpower others. Well…why doesn’t SHE read the damn book?

She wouldn’t acknowledge my attempt to be challenged and to try something outside of Judy Blume’s world, so she just poo-poo’ed me. Fine. She recommended that I BORROW a book from the school library. Do you remember our beloved, inadequate library at IS 131??? Borrow something that’s within our grade level and that I can FULLY understand and write about.

I was pissed. Pissed, pissed, pissed.

So I browsed around each shelf because I had no choice. I was trying to find Sybil and rub it back into her face, but the stupid library had more books on how to use the card catalog than anything else. Nevertheless, I perused and something very morbid caught my eye.

Very, very morbid.

A smile formed on my face because it was the perfect book to throw back at the teacher.

THIRTEEN WAYS TO DISPOSE OF A BODY”

No kidding, there really was such a book. Navy blue cover, white letters and it hadn’t been borrowed by anyone in the school since 1977. I never noticed the look on the librarian’s face, but I know that I started to read Chapter 1 in front of Ms. Chang. Because of my so-called Sybil fiasco, she had to approve of the books we were reading for future book reports.

I knew she was appalled, but she didn’t want to make a scene. I was reading each line with a sneer on my face because she probably thought I was well on my way to being a serial killer or something. All of the kids thought I was being funny (really, I was) and I kept giving Ms. Chang wide-eyed innocent looks throughout the week.

All of the sudden, she decided we weren’t doing any more book reports and the class ought to read Paul Zindel’s, “Pardon Me, You’re Stepping on My Eyeball.” A stupid story about teenage angst and their crazy thoughts.

So I approached Ms. Chang and asked why…since I had already read half of the book. In truth, I didn’t even get past the first chapter because the book was so boring and horribly written by some geek. Yeah, it taught you how to dispose of a body in Chapter 1 with the use of farm machinery. Big deal. I think I watched enough of those Freddy Krueger and Friday the 13th movies to get an idea. I pointed out that I borrowed this book under HER suggestion and was well on my way to doing yet another book report.

She told me to forget about it and return the book. Seriously, after I returned the book to the library, it never went back on the shelf. Gee, I wonder why??

A few months later, she decides we’re going to do book reports again. Guess what I decided to do?

A story about an English teacher who got kidnapped, tied up and beaten by a bunch a dumb high school kids. Because of the stress, he dies of a cardiac arrest and now the kids are debating how they will dispose of the body. Sounds like those typical teen horror movies, huh? And yes, I found the book at the juvenile section of my local library and she approved of it. Seeing that it was only 120 pages and it appeared to be juvie novel…she was okay until I submitted my report. Got an 85 with no comments. I wanted a 95, but hey, it was fun while it lasted!!

Evil me,

Linda

Now, here's the kicker...

Shortly after I sent the email, my curiosity had gotten the best of me and I started to look up these books on Amazon, both name and author.

1 - "Sybil" by Flora Rheta Schreiber (1973)

2 - "13 Ways to Dispose of a Body" by Basil Davenport (1966) [WTF? Basil? What were his parents thinking!?!?]

3 - "Pardon Me You're Stepping on My Eyeball!" by Paul Zindel (1976)

4 - "Killing Mr. Griffin" by Lois Duncan (1986)

AND...Ching actually READ all of these books. Remarkably, we didn't share any of these titles or any literary opinions because we had gone our separate ways during junior high school - she had moved to the boondocks of NJ and I stayed behind in my ghetto crowd.

For her chemistry assignment, she had to borrow the very same book and read up on how to boil out the remains of the subject matter for dissection or something of that nature. OY. This is probably the one time I am grateful that our school received insufficient funding and couldn't even come up with such elaborate science lab experiments. She also read Sybil out of curiosity and re-read it for her Psych curriculum.

As far as the teen novels go, I believed she had to read it for class because Ching's not one for fiction. In fact, she'd rather read the classics for fun than to read nonsense fiction and romance. She hated Zindel and his retarded writing...although Lois Duncan was applauded for other works like, "Down a Dark Hall" and god knows what else I read at that age. When I originally crafted this email, I couldn't get the images of Jennifer Love Hewitt, Freddy Prinze Jr., Ryan Phillippe and Sarah Michelle Gellar out of my head. Little did I know that Ms. Duncan, who originally introduced me to the world of terror and supernatural at 14, was also the author of the botched film. I stand corrected, Mr. Griffin didn't die, but survived the ordeal and decided the turn the tables around the kids. It's obvious that I've watched one too many SciFi Channel movies because I know those kids hacked away at the bastard and he came back for them in bits and pieces. Oh joy!

Yeah, I know, I don't blog...I'll see if I can manage something this year!

An Excerpt from Today's Email -

I wrote this to a mom whose kid once attended our kindergarten school -

Well, nothing new and exciting here, except more heat from our class (as usual) and Trisha, Britney & Sophia are supposedly seeing the principal every day until god knows when.

It all started on one fine day last week when one girl told another - how abominably cute she was.

[Our class is learning, -er and -est suffixes. Sooo...]

The next girl claimed she was cutER.

Then Trisha declared that she was the cutEST of all!!

It ignited a war between the girls regarding who was the fairest of all the land. No king or queen, nor the handsome prince in his white steed, could ever fathom such an internal strife on our school grounds.

So...the claws and talons came out. Then at some given point, Miranda, Britney, & Trisha joined together for an once-in-a-lifetime event singing, "I hate Sophia!". They banded together to eradicate any competition and to determine how their beauty extended vast and far in our Trans kingdom.

The teacher overheard the singing, stepped in, screamed, and sent 3 girls into the principal's office. No more singing during recess. Oh well.

Mikayla was saddened by the singing ban.

Singing may not be my daughter's strongest attributes, but she was disappointed. As of late, she's been watching "Alvin & the Chipmunks" and has been singing like Alvin in hit songs like, "Funky Town" and "Had a Bad Day".

The latest tune you can catch her singing in a soft voice, but it's squeaky enough to be audible - "Don'tcha wish your girlfriend was HOT like ME!"

When does this madness end?

Howdy

I know I've been bad with blogging, but it's better that I keep quiet than to sound like a raving lunatic.

Having caught up with a great many things in the office and some in the home, I may be able to blog here and there. Not as frequently, but I'll make an effort. The only problem now is - I haven't blogged for so long that my writing's gotten wooden and rather obtuse. Hopefully, it'll pass!

Anyway, I have something hysterical to share. More Mikayla-isms, of course!

Mikayla LOVES ham sandwiches slathered with Hellman's mayonnaise. Unfortunately, the child has a hard time understanding that perishables are to be consumed within a week, not within a month. Whenever we have the appropriate stock at home, she doesn't feel like it. Whenever we don't, she'll request a sandwich to be made for tomorrow's snack time. Uh no, sorry kiddo. This, of course, is a frequent occurrence. Then again, being only 7, she doesn't have any concept of the time.

So...whilst in the shower, she asks me to prepare a sandwich for her. Aghast (because I'm in the shower), I told her the supplies had been completely depleted last week and NOW you want the damn sandwich?? I can't begin to tell you how SICK I am of eating the leftover crap she wasn't in the mood for!

Feeling disappointed, her head was down as she left the bathroom. With the bathroom door wide open, a blast of cold air gushed freezing my ass off. Gosh I hate being cold in the shower while my kid is asking for food. Don't laugh, this may happen to you one day.

A thought came to my mind, "hey, how about some prosciutto for snack tomorrow?"

Mikayla: "Ooooh!!! Good idea! I LOVE prosciutto!!!"

Me: "Okay, remind me tomorrow to pack it up for you or else I'll forget. I can't pack it right now, right?"

Mikayla: "Yeah, you can't pack it tonight. It'll go bad. How do I remind you?"

Me: "How about writing a note as a reminder?"

Mikayla: "A note?"

Me: "Yes, a note."

Mikayla: "Um mommy? I don't know how to spell prosciutto."

Me: "Just write Italian ham then."

Mikayla: "Oh okay."

She promptly leaves the makeshift sauna and supposedly writes me a note. Right before she headed off to bed (I was still in the shower), she explained the contents of the note, informed me where I could find the note, and babbled on some more.

Exasperated, I yelled: GET TO BED ALREADY!!!!!!!

Kid disappears in the speed of light.

So this morning...guess what I found?

Wow! It even comes with an illustration!

We purchased some pricey prosciutto at Whole Foods and the kid decides to draw the packaging just in case I gave her Oscar Meyer bologna instead.

Wise ass.

Really dead writing groove - been reading other blogger posts and man, they're a lot more exciting.

Maybe I need to change the template again?
